Changing universe, prey abilties, items, more story content

As you may know, this game was originally set in the Mario universe, with Yoshi as its main character. I chose Yoshi because he was perfect for for the gameplay I was going for, and I couldn't think of a better character, but I wasn't entirely satisfied with it, and I wasn't the only one.

So after some brainstorming, I got more ideas and decided to move away from Yoshi. You now play as a dragon named Yaxi, who gulps down enemy minions to turn them into mana, and can then use this mana to defeat bosses by breathing fire. The lore and background is original too, although you may notice many nods to the Mario series and that's the point. I'm trying to stay in the same vibe of cartoon-science-fantasy.

The level-design and gameplay loop remained the same, with a few minor adjustments, bug fixes, and a few major new features!

  • Prey abilities are now working as intended. For the time being there is only one, the songbirds' "sleepy song" ability.
  • Your character's Resilience stat now reduces the damage inflicted by the preys struggling in his stomach.
  • Several new items and are available to use and several new minions have been added.
  • The HUD now displays your health and your fullness at all times.
  • A new dungeon and boss were added. If you play your items well, you should be able to digest 4 or 5 lemon drops at once, but it won't be easy ;)

There is not a whole lot in the demo for now, but I do admit that I quite love the game mechanics. They are quite simple, but surprisingly challenging due to your actions having non-immediate consequences, forcing you to get a feel of what you can actually eat or not.

Definitely looking forward to seeing more.

It would be nice to have some digestion sounds too :)

Thanks for the feedback! I'm glad you liked the mechanics!

I have developed a system that plays random digestion sounds, selected among different pools depending on HP, but I've yet to determine if it's bug-free. If I can make it work, it will be in the next update.

Awesome :)

I think you can play with pitch in RPG Maker, I'd recommend playing the digestion sounds with a random pitch each time. That will avoid having the sounds feel repetitive. I had tried that in a project of mine and it was really nice :)
